After a small breakfast of cumbrian sausage we set out for OFD. A quick change and we were soon up at the entrance from there we headed to the Big Chamber near the Entrance. Crossing it to join the trade route to Gnome Passage and the corkscrew climb. On the way we bumped into several other groups so at the corkscrew we took a short cut to get down to Salabouriuos Passage. Here it was clear we were now first in the passage. From there we put a rope on the climb down into the Maypole inlet - a tight vadose canyon where progress involves period of crab like walking.

The morning was spent at the Northern Pennine Club with those more experienced in SRT giving training to the other half. I was surprised to hear that the planned trip would likely take 8 hours, with a call out of mid-night. Why would anyone want to be in a cave that long?? I think most of us hoped it would be quicker : )

A flurry of emails over the proceeding week saw us all arrive at the Orpheus caving hut on Friday night with most of a plan, including dragging Richard over from Neston to deliver rope and prove that day trips to the Peak are feasible. A few beers and a good look at the survey on the wall filled in the details to ensure that this wasn’t a simple SRT bounce but instead included some proper caving. Finally, a nip of Arentas’ ‘interesting’ fruitcake schnapps sent us to bed.

Titan – Peak Cavern

Amy had done some fantastic organising, sorting out a slot for us to kip in the TSG hut in Castleton and a permit for Titan for the weekend, but with two weeks to go, the weather was looking dicey. Thankfully, the sun came out in time and after a bit of umming and ahhhrring, we decided to give it a crack.
