Description

After a small breakfast of cumbrian sausage we set out for OFD. A quick change and we were soon up at the entrance from there we headed to the Big Chamber near the Entrance. Crossing it to join the trade route  to Gnome Passage and the corkscrew climb. On the way we bumped into several other groups so at the corkscrew we took a short cut to get down to Salabouriuos Passage.  Here it was clear we were now first in the passage. From there we put a rope on the climb down into the Maypole inlet - a tight vadose canyon where progress involves period of crab like walking.

At the end of the Maypole inlet is of course the climb that gives the passage its name, so down the fixed ladder and some more rope placed as a hand line to aid the climb back up from the streamway. Now we reach the top end of the OFD2 streamway and we are moving quickly up the large canyon, watching out for the hidden potholes which can challenge the shorter members of the caving community.  Gradually, the water level deepens until we have accept a brief stride through waist deep water. Refreshing is one word that could have been used to describe the experience. Thank goodness for neoprene shorts, others on the trip said something else about the dip.

Now we continued on to the Top Waterfall, where Steve decided to have a quick shower. we did a turn around and braced ourselves for the second dip. Luckily, we bought with us a flask of hot chocolate and we had a quick drink, a small bar of chocolate before we continue back up the route we had come in on. A cracking trip with some time for a small beer for everyone in the Ancient Briton and I can say that a Guinness Zero does actually taste like the real thing.
